Navajo, New Mexico was established in 1960. Since towns within the Navajo Nation are not incorporated, Navajo as a modern community comes close to being a township. Navajo Route 12 was also constructed in 1960. Navajo was home to the Navajo Forest Product Industries, a tribal-owned enterprise. Development of NFPI started in June of 1960. NFPI had replaced an old sawmill, which operated for nearly 20 years at the community now referred to as “Sawmill”. Much development has occurred in Navajo because of the lumber industry. NFPI closed down operations in 1994 due to pressure from environmental groups over the lack of an adequate forest management plan.
